I did some research about the silhouette, used the experiment to display the hiding characteristic of it. But the effect transfer fun emotion more than anxiety and pressure, so my next step is how to make the form serious and explain my feeling.

I find an artwork to show the following face, I think I can use the same principle to create a installation combine the projector.

Silhouette Research

I made some experiment text in this week to study the hiding character of the silhouette, I use a small Donald Duck model to create a video. if I want use a stuff to show the hiding I should rotate the stuff, then it will show different information of it's different degree. it also can use for human, people can show their 

Why and How

After this individual meeting, I have tow questions, one is why you use the element of shadow and if I use it how can I use it different between other artists. Why I use this element? I think the different culture let me feel the anxiety, strangeness. I think the culture is create by people, different people own different culture. Silhouette can represent people also can represent the culture.

Silhouette is a very interesting element, it was popular in the mid-18th century, but this form is still picture in that time. people like use it in package design or decorate. However contemporary artist make it become dynamic image. It can be used for artistic creation also can be used for commercial advertising. For example, Japanese company Toshiba use silhouette of people create a very warm advertisement. audience can understand the whole story through a lamp bulb. This not only conveys the warmth of home, also told the audience Toshiba LED bulb durability is very good.

Now artist always use it to make a story telling or individual display. It has a very important character that can overlaps when you put them together.I want use anxiety, pressure and strangeness explain my emotion in a new culture environment. overlaps also have another function that is hiding something. Maybe I can use it to display my feeling, like I want hiding myself when I meet so many different people or staying in a new environment.

except overlaps by each other, the same stuff also can overlap.sometimes we cannot understand people through a silhouette.for instance, there are two children's silhouette in a same picture, we can't make sure which child is happy and which one is sad, because silhouette can hiding some mood in some angle.

it let think about that can I use the silhouette combine real shape, the real shape we can see the dress or expression, it can influence visitor's emotion and activity.For example,an artwork named "Body Movies" projecting still picture of real people on the screen, then visitors can walk through it. their shadow will project on the wall by a big lamp.players can control the distance to scale own shadow, even the real shape was still picture, but the shadow let this artwork vivid and interesting. some players mimic the position of the real shape. it looks like some relationship with the real shape. the different size silhouettes and real people inside and outside the screen let me have to think about the relationship between each other. Also gives me a feeling between the human and environment.

This is a other artwork named "Ageing", also a like a story telling, in this artwork, it add some additional elements in the silhouette, it makes the artwork deliver more information to audience.

For myself, my background is new media art design, so I learned different thing in undergraduate like web design, video art, visual conmunication and so on, I like do some artwork combine installation and projection mapping, I like use some artworks to explain my feeling of my life in different period. now almost all of my artwork made by projector. I put my thinking of the world in the artwork, I like use simple elements to explain my idea, simple elements come from our live, we can easily understanding its meaning.


Research process
I made a video installation for my undergraduate thesis, I use many boxes to create space that concave and convex, then I project some video made by myself in the installation. the main element is a person and his shadow, I want use it to express my mood in that time. I think people's thoughts and actions are not in a same space because we can't do anything what we want to do, there are some external factors interfere with your. So I also use some elements in this artwork such as hands and eyes, it means sometimes somebody can control your behavior and different people will use different vision to see you.

I want use the same form combine the interactive technology I learned to finish my graduate thesis project.  in last semester, so I made a small installation to display it. also I study how to use Kinect combine the Max/msp to record user's action and projecting them on the screen.

professor Liubo told me a artist named Scott Snibbe, he is a interactive artist. my form is similar with a kind of his artwork named Deep Wall, he used a wall and split it by many lines, use projector mapping some shadow of human on the wall.

Also he like to use human's shadow to make artwork, he was made a video installation named Transit, it's a video art played in the screen of Los Angeles international airport. 

Before I know this artist I was already use this form by myself, so I don't want give up my style, I hope I can find a way to show my style. maybe I can start from the installation.
